Explain RM77mil contract, Mr Defence Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: MP for Petaling Jaya Utara Tony Pua questioned the government’s awarding of a RM77 million contract to the brother of Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Parliament, DAP’s Pua asked, “Is it because the company, owned by Haris Onn, was offering the lowest bid for the contract”?

The contract to Lembah Sari Sdn Bhd is for the printing of security-labels for liquor and beer from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.

Pua also alleged that the relative of the minister was given a contract through direct negotiation.

The Edge Malaysia on September 12 reported that the contract was to design, print, store, supply and distribute banderols (tax stamps) for liquor (including beer) between 2014 and 2019.

The company would also supply the department with authentication devices and necessary training.

Lembah Sari’s website showed that the company received the letter of acceptance from the Customs Department for the concession on July 21.

This latest award means that Lembah Sari, which is controlled by businessman Haris Onn Hussein, who is brother to Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein and cousin to Prime Minister Najib Razak, now effectively monopolises the security labels for all locally produced and imported cigarettes, as well as beer and liquor, in the country.
