Malaysia will not issue fatwa on jihadist

Malaysia will not issue any fatwa (edict) on the status of the conflict in Syria as it is unnecessary, says Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.“It is clear that this (war and killing fellow Muslims) is prohibited.“There is no need for a fatwa on it,” he told reporters after witnessing the presentation of business zakat (tithes) by 10 cooperatives amounting to RM2.3mil to the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council here yesterday.

Jamil Khir (pic)hoped Muslims in Malaysia were clear about the matter.

Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, have prohibited their citizens from carrying out any jihad (struggle) in any conflict-torn country, including in Syria where the unrest involved opposing Muslim forces.

Jamil Khir said the so-called jihad in Syria was against Islamic teaching, adding that Islam forbids war among its followers and that killing each other is not considered jihad.
